Hagerty: Plastic Fantastic and the Joy of Buttons

The fun of SCCA® Track Night in America Driven by Tire Rack events is you put your car on the track at a time and price that works for you. If you own a shiny new BMW with nifty paddle shifters – bring it! If your ride is an aging B5 VW Passat with a two-pedal slushbox – we wholeheartedly encourage you to join the fun! And since track driving obviously fascinates you, we’re guessing another hobby of yours is spotting automotive treasures, and possibly even procuring them for your own enjoyment. In that case, we found an article all but guaranteed to pique your interest.

While we welcome virtually any vehicle at Track Night events, if you’re looking for something fun(ky) to have #funwithcars in during the coming year, why not pick up a ride with a fantastically analog driver’s compartment? Need a list so you can start your (ahem) window shopping? Hagerty has an article specifically about rad interiors.

The official insurance partner of SCCA, Hagerty’s media arm has a constant flow of amazing content, and they recently produced an article entitled “Plastic Fantastic: The Joy of Buttons.” The premise is this: There’s delight in 1980s tacticity.

“There’s a joy to 1980s buttons that we love,” writes author Nathan Chadwick. “This was an era of All The Technology, All At Once, which meant buttons and sliders for all sorts of functions sprouted up all over the dashboard and binnacles like a rampaging fungus. Add in hard black plastic and it all seems very Tonka Truck-style cool now – another way to feel at one with your car, other than driving, braking, steering, and swapping ratios.”

Chadwick proceeds to pull together a list of six vehicles that boasted ’80s-amazing interiors for drivers to enjoy. Making the list? First up is the Porsche 928, followed by the first-gen Toyota MR2. The list presses the limits of the author’s own “1980” stance by including the Z32 Nissan 300ZX, but it quickly settles back into Madonna’s heyday with some fantastic European designs you can’t get in America – although in at least one case you could, but your version would be inscribed with “Dodge” instead of “Renault.”

Are these cars you should buy? We say yes – we’d love to see you at a Track Night in America event in one of these cars!

Or, just read the article via the link below and enjoy the 1980s automotive interior eye candy.
